Isa.9:6 – For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

This amazing prophesy of the birth of Christ has blessed millions of God’s children over the last 2700 years. Isaiah spoke as if singing a prophetic song about the beauty and blessedness of the coming Savior. What strikes me about this prophesy is the personal nature that emanates from this passage. This child was born for us. He is wonderful because I needed His miraculous intervention in my life. He is Counselor because Christ Himself is the wisdom of God that brings guidance into every part of my life. He is Mighty God, the incredible revelation of the greatest of all mysteries. The Creator entered into His creation because of my broken condition. He is the Everlasting Father, my Father Who has been watching and caring over me from eternity. He is the Prince of Peace, in the midst of unthinkable strife in this godless society He has become my peace. Here is how Martin Luther describes this verse.

“Therefore we need to open up our ears and listen to what is said about this child. The prophet praises the child so highly and makes such a big deal out of him that heaven and earth are nothing by comparison. He draws all created things into this child, who is both creature and God. To our eyes he looks like any other child: someone needs to feed him baby food, sing to him, rock him to sleep, and so on. But when you listen to the prophet, he preaches, “A child is born and a son is given—that is true. But here’s how: He is born to us, given to us, his government is on his shoulders, and he is called Wonderful, Counselor, Strength, Champion, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

There is one more shocking phrase in this prophesy, “the government shall rest on His shoulders”. How is it possible that the government of all things rests on this baby? To really understand the power of this word you have to make it personal. The government of my life rests on His shoulders. He has me, He always has. He has you, no matter what your circumstances look like – trust Him. He is governing everything for your good.
