Luke 2:10,11 – And so the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”.

The birth of Christ contains the greatest of all mysteries. The mystery begins to unfold when you begin to realize His birth was personal, He was born for you and me. Isaiah said it like this,
Isa.9:6 – “For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.

Once you see the personal side then you begin to grasp the supernatural side of His two births. A virgin conceived in her womb and God became a man. That in itself is beyond any of us, but then you have to grasp His eternal Sonship. Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father. He is not created but eternally begotten, that is impossible to grasp. Here is how Augustine says it.

“Your faith, which has gathered you all here in this large crowd, is well aware that a Savior was born for us today. He was born of the Father always, of his mother once; of the Father without reference to sex, of his mother without the use of it. With the Father, of course, there was no womb to conceive him in; with his mother there was no male embrace to beget him. By the first nativity from the Father nature was preserved. By the second nativity from his mother the seeds of grace were sown. In the former he retained the majesty of the divine substance. In the latter he took on fellowship with us in our human mortality. And the reason he was prepared to come through this latter birth was so that he might become obedient to the death and by dying might conquer death.”

So if you are still stuck on jingle bells, sleigh rides, and roasting chestnuts then you really have no idea. The eternally and only begotten Son became a human, born of a virgin, to give His life as a sin offering for me. This is why Christmas is such a big deal, creation itself is still responding to the day the Creator entered into His own creation. Merry Christmas !!!
