Isa.9:6 – For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

One of the beautiful things about the Christmas miracle is how the Lord cloaked Himself in infancy. Not only was Christ born as a human child, He was born in obscurity. It’s easy to get accustomed to the stable and the manger and miss the beauty of that event. God Himself born among His creatures, unthinkable. To the world He did not appear as a king, just as His church looks to be unimpressive and insignificant. Just as Isaiah described, His birth is wonderful or supernatural In the same way His church, although unimpressive to the world, supernatural and wonderful to the Lord. Here is how Luther describes this.

“I should say that here in this text Christ is called Wonderful. He rules his church in a wonderful way, so that she is righteous, wise, pure, strong, living, and God’s own child, even though she appears to be weak, dead, and sinful. To what must I cling so that I can say this? To the Word, just like the shepherds did. The Lord Christ himself goes about things strangely for his own part too. He wishes to become a king, yet he lies down in a manger and is born of a poor virgin who scarcely has a shirt to wear. He should have been born of a queen and had his chamber in a golden palace in a wealthy kingdom, but instead he is a beggar. Isn’t he wonderful for his own part? So we need to learn to open the eyes of our heart like the shepherds and not judge according to the color or appearance, but according to the Word.”

So here we are at another Christmas reminded of the miracle of the birth of Christ. He was born to an unmarried teen aged girl, raised as the son of a carpenter, noticed only by shepherds and gentile priests. In the same way our lives as His followers may seem unimpressive but even our lives can be described as wonderful. Christ has come to live inside of us and though the world may not see it, He has made everything about our lives brand new.

  1. Unimpressive, hidden, what a strange way to describe the Creator. Even to us his followers, we must constantly, purposely seek Him out. We are not bombarded with a pep rally everyday and swept into unforgettable reminders everywhere we go. Just the opposite, we must learn to do that ourselves as the world tries to captivate our senses towards everything else but Him. I find myself asking, how did I get here and then, how do I stay? His wonderful grace and provision, I’ve learned it’s more than enough!

  2. AMEN!PASTOR WE CHILDRENS OF JESUS MOST HAVE THE LIGHT OF GOD TO SHINE THROUGH US AT ALL TIMES IN A DARK AND SINFUL WORLD! PRAISE THE LORD !🙏🙌👏
