Jn.11:28,29 – When she had said this, she left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard this, she got up quickly and came to Him.
This is an amazingly beautiful phrase that can be easily missed if you are not paying attention. Martha brings this personal message from Jesus, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you”. These are some of the greatest words Mary has ever heard. No wonder Mary followed up by washing Jesus’s feet. Her broken heart had been more than comforted. Lazarus was still in the grave but Jesus was calling for her. Maybe you have some stuff that has died and you are looking for a miracle. Be still, can you hear it, the Teacher is calling for you. He loves you and wants to have you near. In moments like those the miracle becomes secondary, if Jesus wants to be near me I know everything will be okay. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this scene.
“This is one of the most beautiful things that ever could be said to you, “The Master is here and he’s asking for you.” Mary’s response must be ours, “she quickly went off to find him”.”
But how exactly does He call us today. We have never seen Jesus physically but He is still calling us near. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this present day calling.
“She invites her sister to go and meet him: “He calls for thee, enquires what is become of thee, and would have thee sent for.” Note, When Christ our Master comes, he calls for us. He comes in his word and ordinances, calls us to them, calls us by them, calls us to himself. He calls for thee in particular, for thee by name; and, if he call thee, he will cure thee, he will comfort thee.”
Henry says He calls us through His ordinances, through His written word. The Lord is calling out to each of His sons and daughters constantly through His book. These words carry the very life of God. He is calling you to come and be with Him. Mary responded to the Master’s call, she was comforted by His presence and she was amazed when her brother was raised from the dead. Maybe all He wanted, all He wants today is our nearness and love, the miracle part is easy for Him.

The secret place, the meeting place has always been in The Word. It appears to the world and marginal Christians a dust collector. Sure it takes time to learn the script, but then you begin to take part in His production. On earth as it is in heaven!
