HIDDEN IN THE RIVER

Isa.32:1 – A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, and a cover from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

Everyday we see the birth pangs of the coming kingdom increasing. We are slowly, yet steadily moving toward the rewards of the coming kingdom and the awful justice and judgement of Almighty God. Putin has reminded us of how evil man can be when left to himself, justice will be sudden and complete for him. If you are not in a living relationship with the Lord it would be easy to be overcome with fear and anger as we see the birth pangs setting in. In today’s verse we see our only refuge from the tempest, the storms that are setting in today. Christ is our Rock of protection. We find our safety and refreshment under His shadow. The storm of God’s judgement falls on Christ, we receive His safety and refreshment. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this.

“Christ, by his own free act, has made himself the surety of such, he has voluntarily put himself in their stead; and if justice has any thing against them, he has undertaken to answer for them. By his own act, he has engaged to be responsible for them; so that if they have exposed themselves to God’s wrath, and to the stroke of justice, it is not their concern, but his, how to answer or satisfy for what they have done. Let there be never so much wrath that they have deserved, they are as safe as if they never had deserved any; because he has undertaken to stand for them, let it be more or less. If they are in Christ Jesus, the storm does of course light on him, and not on them; as when we are under a good shelter, the storm, that would otherwise come upon our heads, lights upon the shelter.”

Like all of us I have tried to picture myself living in one of the Ukrainian cities that are now under siege. It seems like for most there is no place to hide. I see this bombardment as a picture of what is happening on all mankind today. The world is under siege, I am hidden away under His shadow. He has taken my judgement, I receive His refreshment and comfort.
