2 Peter 1:16-18 – For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such a declaration as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory: “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased”– and we ourselves heard this declaration made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
I got saved in 1973 in the middle of the Jesus People Movement. One of the truths emphasized in those days was the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. That hasn’t been something we hear a lot about over the last twenty years or more but nevertheless, Jesus will return. I think maybe it is the seasons of unrest and turmoil in the world that cause many to turn their attention to the return of Christ and His coming kingdom. I believe that a personal revelation of the Second Coming and all of its ramifications serve as a check for us that brings spiritual adjustments. Here is how Barclay interprets Peter’s words in this passage.
“PETER comes to the message which it was his great aim to bring to his people, concerning ‘the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ’. As we shall see quite clearly as we go on, the great aim of this letter is to bring people back to certainty with regard to the second coming of Jesus Christ. The heretics whom Peter is attacking no longer believed in it; it was so long delayed that people had begun to think it would never happen at all.…Peter uses the transfiguration story not as a foretaste of the resurrection of Jesus, as it is commonly viewed, but as a foretaste of the triumphant glory of the second coming.”
So maybe the insane weather patterns, pandemics, and wars and rumors of more wars are intended to gain our attention and shift our focus once again. Jesus is surely coming again. Will it be in my lifetime? No one knows for sure. The signs of His return are all around us, there can’t be much more time left in this age. So what is our response? Maybe its time for a shift to come in the body of Christ. Maybe its time to reevaluate what matters in our lives and let the world know that JESUS IS COMING BACK SOON.
