Jn.4:14 – but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.
One of the amazing things about this promise is the promise of total and complete satisfaction. This quality is totally unknown in this life. Whatever it is we look to to gain our satisfaction and contentment it never quite seems to be enough. How much money do we need to be finally content? What about sex, is there a time when you are finally and totally satisfied? The same could be said about accomplishments, possessions, titles, or fame; when is enough enough? The addict knows this world well, always looking for that high that finally does it for them. What is the reason for this? Solomon said that we have eternity in our hearts. The only eternal thing in existence is the Lord, only He can stop this maddening search for completion. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this and the Lord’s answer found in drinking living water.
“It is satisfying, as there is enough in it to satisfy the soul as to degree… There is room enough here for the soul to extend itself. Here is an infinite ocean of it. If men be not satisfied here in degree of happiness, the cause is with themselves. ’Tis because they don’t open their mouths wide enough. There is enough of that which is enjoyed, the glory and the love of God, did we but so apply our souls to it as to take our fill of it. And whenever obstacles are removed, the soul shall be satisfied in degree of happiness, though, indeed, I do not think that the soul will ever be so filled as to be cloyed (tired of it), or so as not to desire and pursue after more.…But they will ever have an appetite to further degrees, which shall keep employed in launching forth further and further into this ocean, and shall cause ’em to receive with relish those perpetual additions which they shall freely obtain, as they pursue without painful labor and without those hindrances and disappointments which pursuits are attended with in this world.”
Jonathan Edwards’ words have a smell of authenticity in them. Why is that? He is speaking from experience, he had learned to drink and drink again of that fountain of God’s love. This is the very thing we are all thirsting for. This is the drink that brings contentment and completion. Come and drink of the living water that Jesus brings, here is the place you will never thirst again.
