Eph.1:13,14 – Amp. – In Him, you also, when you heard the word of truth, the good news of your salvation, and [as a result] believed in Him, were stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit [the One promised by Christ] as owned and protected [by God]. The Spirit is the guarantee [the first installment, the pledge, a foretaste] of our inheritance until the redemption of God’s own [purchased] possession [His believers], to the praise of His glory.
The Holy Spirit gives us a taste of what heaven will be like. He is joy unspeakable, peace beyond comprehension, and the sense of being loved like we have never been loved before. The Holy Spirit awakens a hunger for God inside of us. Tasting Him deeply delivers us from the attractions of this world. He is our inheritance; living in Him for eternity is our portion purchased by the blood of our Lord. Here is how F. E. Marsh describes the Holy Spirit as our earnest.
“In us as a Light to illuminate; in us as a Friend to counsel; in us as Water to refresh; in us as a Comforter to cheer; in us as a Teacher to teach; in us as a Guide to direct; in us as Oil to make us shine; in us a Fire to purge; in us a Dove to sympathize; in us as the Seal to secure; in us as the Witness to confirm; in us as the Power to keep; in us as the Power to pray; in us as the Source of fruit-bearing; in us as Sap to make us grow; in us as the Earnest of the coming glory, and to bring to our remembrance the precious promises of God, which are yea and amen in Christ.”
Christianity without the fellowship of the Holy Spirit is just an empty facade. He is the very life of God infused within us and poured upon us again and again. If you are lonely He is your friend, if you are heart broken He is your Comforter, if you are confused He is the Counselor, if you are tempted He is your power to overcome, if you are bound with fear, He is God’s love that drives out all fear. The Holy Spirit is with us and in us. The amazing thing is that I am also in Him. My life is consumed with Him, this is the life I have chosen to live. How could I not once I realized He had chosen me.
