Jn.6:53-58 – So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
In this discourse we see Jesus going past the place of no return. He is unveiling the very heart of the gospel, He is the life everyone is longing for. Coming to Him and drinking deeply of Him is the center of our Christian faith. He was not offering just a better life in this world with a better political system. He was and is offering life itself. This life flows from Him and is received by receiving Him and walking with Him. He wasn’t revealing truths about God or even how to live your life; He was revealing God Himself. “I am the bread of life, eat this bread and drink my blood and you will never be hungry again”. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this.
“To eat his flesh is to take into our life by faith all that Jesus did for us by giving his body for us. To drink his blood is to take by faith all that the blood of Jesus has purchased for us. This “eating” and “drinking” is receiving the life, power, and virtue of all that Jesus is to replace all that we were in Adam. Jesus’ blood and body is the Tree of Life, which is offered to everyone who follows him.”
Jesus is finally unveiling Who He is and His purpose in this discourse. He came to offer His life as a sin offering. He is the broken bread; eating this bread is the only way to life. As we feast on Him, His life and power flow into us. We are feasting on the life of God found only in Christ. This is the message of the feeding of the 5000 – Eat His body and drink His blood; this is where we discover real life.
Love the revelation that “Jesus’ body and blood is the tree of life”
