LILIES OF THE FIELD

Matt.6:28 – So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin…

“Consider the lilies of the field”. Apparently, Jesus was captivated by the beauty of creation during His time on earth. He now had a different perspective of all He had made- He was living in His own creation observing the beauty and majesty as if He was only a creature. Apparently, His take was not only the stunning beauty He observed in creation, it was also the Father’s meticulous care for all of His creation. He takes care of fish and birds and even lilies; surely He will care for me. Maybe what He was saying was something like this, “Sure, there are plenty of troubles in this life, I am not denying that. It’s just that focusing on the problems causes you to miss the real story. God’s magnificent glory is all around you. Not only that, creation clearly teaches that He cares for His creatures, even the least of these.” Here are some observations from Spurgeon on this verse.

“And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin : and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Clothes must not be made much of; for in our finest array, flowers far excel us. We must not be anxious about how we shall be clad; for the field lilies, not under the gardener’s care, are as glorious as the most pompous of monarchs; and yet they enjoy life free from labor and thought. Lovely lilies, how ye rebuke our foolish nervousness! The array of lilies comes without fret: why do we kill ourselves with care about that which God gives to plants which cannot care?”

So for today, consider the lily. The beauty reminds us of God’s incredible artistry, the fragrance speaks of the attraction of Christ, their whiteness speaks of the purity of Christ, and their abundance declares the abundant provision of Christ. His glory is everywhere, His provision is more than enough, His attraction is irresistible, and His care for me is thorough and constant. So let’s consider the lilies of the field; if the Lord cares for flowers and birds, He will always care for you.
