2 Corinthians 3:18, “But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
In Jonathan Edwards’ day he was known for the sermon he called “A DIVINE AND SUPERNATURAL LIGHT”. It was a sermon focused on the supernatural nature of conversion. Salvation comes by a revelation of Christ as the Savior from our sin, that revelation is the beginning of our real life. When Peter declared that Jesus was “the Christ, the Son of the living God” Jesus told Peter that this was not a natural or intellectual understanding of Christ, He said it was a revelation that came from God alone. Here is a quote from Edwards on the Divine and Supernatural Light.
“This light is such as effectually influences the inclination, and changes the nature of the soul. It assimilates the nature to the divine nature, and changes the soul into an image of the same glory that is beheld…..This knowledge will wean from the world, and raise the inclination to heavenly things. It will turn the heart to God as the fountain of good, and to choose him for the only portion. This light, and this only, will bring the soul to a saving close with Christ. It conforms the heart to the gospel, mortifies its enmity and opposition against the scheme of salvation therein revealed: it causes the heart to embrace the joyful tidings, and entirely to adhere to, and acquiesce in the revelation of Christ as our Savior; it causes the whole soul to accord and symphonize with it, admitting it with entire credit and respect, cleaving to it with full inclination and affection. And it effectually disposes the soul to give up itself entirely to Christ.”
What Jesus and Jonathan Edwards were both describing is a true born again experience. It is not enough to agree with the premises of the Bible or even the claims of Christ intellectually. There has to be a revelation of Christ. Just as Peter saw and declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God”, we too must have that light burst into our soul. It is the effect of the light of God that changes us, as Edwards said, it “changes our inclinations”. Our hearts have been awakened and we now are beholding the glory of God in Jesus Christ.
