THE POWER OF SIGNS AND WONDERS

THE POWER OF SIGNS AND WONDERS

Rom.15:18,19 – For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit…

Our nation is longing for the supernatural. Fallen man is not even aware of this longing, but it pulsates in every heart nevertheless. Many dutifully (yet reluctantly) manage to go to church services devoid of power wondering at the unseen elephant in the room. Where is the power that is seen on every page in the New Testament? Are signs and wonders just for days gone by or some foreign mission field where “they need that” ?

It is only a return to the power of signs and wonders that can effect this secular society that we live in. Here is how the Life in the Spirit Commentary describes this.

“We know from the New Testament that the miraculous regularly accompanied the preaching of the gospel. In order to provide his readers with evidence that Jesus was the Messiah, John reports in his Gospel some of the various signs (miracles) that Jesus performed. Luke records for us the manner in which the miracle served to bring attention to the message being preached, both among the apostles and in the ministry of Paul. It was the miraculous that seized the attention of people for whom there was no lack of religious and philosophical options…..Unfortunately, such a combined ministry emphasis is often lacking in North American evangelism. The New Testament model of ministry is still applicable in our modern, pluralistic world. Will it not be a return to such dynamic ministry—in which the powerful proclamation of God’s Word is accompanied by a demonstration of his power in the marketplace—that will bring the gospel onto the main stage of a world distracted by religious and pseudo–spiritual sideshows?”

How can we see this power return to our churches today? We have to make room for the Holy Spirit in our public meetings. Relegating the Spirit to your prayer closet, a special meeting, or to a back room somewhere will never effect our society. Waiting on the Lord and expecting Him to move among us is essential. Will there be problems? Absolutely! Will there be pushback and criticism? You can count on it! Will the Lord move in our midst? That is exactly what He will do. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The power of the Holy Spirit among us is our only solution.

  1. Falling back and settling because we believe we are not “worthy”, some people just can’t get out of the past. yes if we were living some 2100 years ago, this could very well be true. Why such a small percentage of people, of those who call themselves Christians settle for a little known Triune God that they can only say “works in mysterious ways” Those who know differently, better start speaking up, tick, tick, tick
