Jn.1:4,5 – “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.”
This is where true life begins. All of us were born living in the darkness of this fallen world. We may have heard about light, believed in the light, and even sing about the light but until we are awakened by the light we still remain in darkness. We have no idea what we are missing because we have never truly seen anything. Jesus often healed the blind in His ministry pointing us to the other kind of blindness, spiritual blindness, that we have all had to deal with. Often times when Jesus healed a blind person the first thing they saw was Christ. After that, they saw their whole world through the light that was bursting into their world. That is exactly how it is with each of us. Christ opens our eyes, we see His glory, and then we begin to finally see everything else. Creation comes alive, the Bible comes alive, church comes alive, and the people in our world come alive. Light brings us out of darkness so we can begin to live. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this light.
“There is scarcely any similitude is made use of more frequently or is more insisted upon in the Scripture to set forth truth, religion and the gospel by, than light. Thus God is compared to the luminary, for it is said he “is light, and in him is no darkness at all”. And so Jesus Christ is resembled to the sun, is called “the light of the world” [John 8:12], the morning star [Revelation 22:16]. And gospel truth is as the light that is shed down from this luminary upon us, and enlightens the spiritual world. He sheds around spiritual wisdom in the minds of those men he enlightens, as the sun diffuses his beams in the atmosphere.”
Just as light shown out of darkness at the creation of our world light has shown out of darkness as we became new creations. We had no idea how much darkness affected us. Now that we can see we can walk in the light. It all starts and flows out from Christ. We now see our world from the light that emanates from Him. He is the light of the world.

It’s easy now to see how we assumed that we were at least partially enlightened, encountering as children a form of godliness. To be a good person, which most thought was their description, and then the light. Almost like the old TV shows where the accused was put under a bright light, shadows exposed, truth be told. Conviction, repentance, but then freedom. How can you not love Jesus.
