1 Tim.6:11,12 – But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Paul left Timothy in a challenging yet very important position as the pastor of the church in Ephesus. Timothy’s testimony and lifestyle would be critical in leading this important church. As he is closing his letter Paul begins to give specific encouragement to his young disciple. Paul begins to describe key characteristics he wants to see pursued in a man of God. First Paul says to pursue righteousness. What does Paul mean when he speaks of righteousness. Well first of all this was the foundation of the apostle’s message. He said that the righteous man would live by faith. This righteousness is a gift from God to all who call upon the Lord. We are declared righteous by faith in Christ Jesus. His message of righteousness doesn’t stop there, Christ begins to live His righteous life in us. This is the fruit of all who have received this precious gift of righteousness. Next Timothy is encouraged to pursue godliness. This is the evidence that we have been born again, this is the Christ like nature that begins to be formed in us. It is a description of the nature of the Lord, it is described as goodness. Next on this list is faith. Faith is our awakening to God and His kingdom. Living by faith is what we do now. We have tasted the goodness of the Lord and we know He is working everything out for our good. Now Paul encourages Timothy to allow God’s love to be formed in Him. This is the obvious proof that we have been changed. We now love different things than the rest of the world. We love God and from that supernatural love we begin to have a compassion for people. Perseverance is also on Paul’s list of characteristics in a man of God. Perseverance is the results of faith being formed deep inside of us. Receiving a calling and a promise from the Lord deposits faith deep inside of us. Our eyes are on Jesus, we will finish the race. Finally Paul challenges Timothy to walk in gentleness. This is not a characteristic most associate with strong men. Gentleness would be the description of Jesus. When He was beaten and mocked what was His response? “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing.” The world is searching for men of God, men who follow Christ will have major effect on our world
