Col.1:19 – For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,
Paul is describing the revelation of God he had seen in Christ. Paul’s description stems from his encounter on the Damascus Road. He tasted what John lived with for three years; Jn.1:14,16 – “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.…For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace”. John was describing Christ in His “unglorified” state, Paul had seen Christ and His glory on full display.
As we approach Christmas this year I want to focus on this word fullness. The whole point of Christmas was this fullness being put on display in a man. God revealed Himself beginning in this baby born on Christmas Day and displayed in the life, ministry, death, resurrection, and glorification of His Son. The amazing thing about all of this, Christ is the first fruits, now this fullness has come to live in us. Here is how Albert Barnes describes this.
“This is to us a most precious truth. We have a Savior who is in no respect deficient in wisdom, power, and grace to redeem and save us. There is nothing necessary to be done in our salvation which he is not qualified to do; there is nothing which we need to enable us to perform our duties, to meet temptation, and to bear trial, which he is not able to impart. In no situation of trouble and danger will the church find that there is a deficiency in him; in no enterprise to which she can put her hands will there be a lack of power in her great Head to enable her to accomplish what he calls her to do. We may go to him in all our troubles, weaknesses, temptations, and wants, and may be supplied from his fullness—just as if we were thirsty, we might go to an ocean of pure water and drink.”
So that’s the plan, as we draw near to Christmas this year we will come to this ocean of pure water and drink, we will drink of His fullness. That’s the point of Christmas after all, it was the moment that God came to live among us so that we can be drawn into this heavenly life. So let’s enjoy this life in all its fullness – Merry Christmas.
