Lk.1:46-49 – And Mary said:
“My soul exalts the Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
“For He has had regard for the humble state of His bond-servant;
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.
“For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.
We have to sing Mary’s song with her. Mary was singing about the coming Savior by faith, for us He has already come and He has done great things. “What has He done?”, you may ask. He called me from my world of darkness, He rescued me from a pit of misery and bondage, He has washed away my sin, He has filled me with His Spirit, and He has put a new song in my mouth. He is sitting before the Father representing me and praying for me. How can I not sing? The world sings songs of misery and disappointments, we sing songs of joy. Here is how Charles Spurgeon describes singing this song of joy with Mary.
“What a fulness of truth is there in these few words: “He that is mighty hath done to me great things.” It is a text from which a glorified spirit in heaven might preach an endless sermon. I pray you, lay hold upon the thoughts which I have in this poor way suggested to you, and try to reach where Mary stood in holy exultation. The grace is great, but so is its giver; the love is infinite, but so is the heart from which it wells up; the blessedness is unspeakable, but so is the divine wisdom which planned it from of old. Let our hearts take up the Virgin’s magnificat, and praise the Lord right joyously at this hour.”
Mary was filled with the joy of expectancy after her angelic visitation and the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, her world was changed forever. She was singing a song of this brand new life, Christ the Savior would surely be born. For us today we also sing songs of Christmas joy. Christ has come and He has overshadowed us as well. He has filled us with His Spirit and a joyful expectancy of His coming kingdom. While the world is overcome with anxiety over their troubles in life, we can join with Mary and say, the Lord has done great things for me. Its not that we don’t have troubles because we do. We just know they are temporary and the eternal kingdom is bursting on the scene.

1 thought on “HE HAS DONE GREAT THINGS”
Joy to my world, the Lord has come to reside in me. I can have as much of Him as I choose to take hold of, He holds nothing of Himself from me. Why sometimes I have to be reminded and drift as though I forgot?
