Jn.4:10 – Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
I think of this scene at Jacob’s well quite often. It shows the kindness of Jesus reaching out to a woman who had lived a miserable life. He told her if she only knew…..if she only knew Who was there talking to her at the well she would find life’s answers. All she needed was to discover the identity of this strange man at Jacob’s well. Have you discovered the answer to the question? Who is Jesus after all?
1. THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD
He is the Father’s only begotten Son who has lived in the Father’s love before time and creation. He has loved each of us from eternity and came to live among us to reveal the Father’s love. He is the Son of God born of the Father in eternity without a mother, born as a man in Bethlehem without a human father.
2. THE CREATOR AND SUSTAINER OF ALL THINGS
This woman was looking into the eyes of her creator. He had formed her in her mother’s womb, He formed you in your mother’s womb. Not only did He form us but He has loved us all along. It is His love that sustains all things.
3. THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD
The Savior was talking to a broken woman who had apparently tried everything in her quest for satisfaction. He came to wash away her sin but also far much more than that; He came to pour life into her soul. Salvation is not only about eternal life, it is about receiving life itself.
4. THE HEAVENLY HIGH PRIEST AND INTERCESSOR
This traveling preacher that had taken a break at the well was more than a preacher. He would become our eternal High Priest and Intercessor. He prays for us. This rejected woman found someone Who would be on her side and would represent her in heaven. There could not be any better news.
5. THE BAPTIZER IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
Jesus was telling this woman, “If you only knew Who I am”. He is saying the same thing to everyone today, “If you only knew”. When we see Him as He is, in His glory, our only response is to fall on our face and worship Him. As we do this water pours onto us and in us and through us. We become consumed by this river of Living Water.
Amen
