Jn.8:12 – Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
Light is an amazing and beautiful part of God’s creation. Without light there would be no creation, actually light is the beginning of creation. Natural light flows out from things the Lord has created but true light flows out from Him. The Bible says that the sun and moon will not be the light for the New Jerusalem but the Lord Himself will be the light of that city. Here is a quote from Jonathan Edwards about Christ, the Light of the World.
“Christ hath the place of the sun in the spiritual world, and therefore he is called “the Sun of righteousness.” As the natural world is all enlightened with the light of the sun, so is the church of God and the whole spiritual world by Jesus Christ. As the sun, when he rises, does as it were bless the world with his light, [and] scatters away the darkness of the night; so doth Christ in the souls of all the elect. As the sun, by his return in the spring, revives all the face of the earth, and as it were puts new life into all things on the face of the earth, quickens the seeds and roots that lie hid in the earth, and causes the grass, and herbs, and trees that seemed to be dead to live again; so doth Christ quicken and enliven dead souls, and puts new life into souls after decays, and turns of spiritual coldness, and benumbedness (that is a word), and causes souls to increase and grow.”
Jesus preached about this light shining out from the prophet John the Baptist. He said John was a burning and shining light. Like all of us the light did not originate from John, he was reflecting the light of God. The characteristics of John’s ministry describe this light beautifully. Jesus said John was a burning and shining light. He was burning with a heart on fire with the light of God’s love. His love for God was poured out as he called his nation to repentance. John was also a shining light, He was shining with a revelation of Christ. He boldly declared that Jesus was the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. He also declared that Christ would be the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit. The light is still shining out today from His church. We are now serving as the light of the world as His passion and revelation burn brightly inside of us.
