Jn.14:20 – On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you.

I know the Bible can only be understood by revelation, this verse makes that unmistakably clear. What could Jesus even mean here? He is in the Father, I am in Him, and He is in me. How is that possible? This must be describing the eternal relationship of intimacy that Jesus enjoyed with the Father. This is what He was referring to when He asked the Father to include His followers in the oneness He has always enjoyed. At the very root of this is the Holy Spirit, after all that is what Jesus was teaching about here. The Father and Son have been wrapped in their love for one another from eternity, that love is an amazing person, the Holy Spirit. What Jesus was saying is that this intimacy was now being given to His followers. When we are immersed in the Holy Spirit we are being immersed into the love between the Father and the Son. That is what it means for Jesus to be in the Father, Jesus also being inside of us, and us being inside of Him. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this.

“After the outpouring of the Spirit on the apostles. At that day divine light would shine, and their eyes would see more clearly, like those of the blind man at the second touch of Christ’s hand, who at first only saw men as trees walking. By all who receive the Spirit of truth. They knew that Christ is in the Father and is one with the Father by their experience of what Christ had done for them and in them. Christ was in them, and they were in Christ, because the relationship was mutual. Christ was in them and they were in Christ, which speaks of an intimate and inseparable union. Union with Christ is the life of believers. The knowledge of this union is their inexpressible joy and satisfaction.”

This Spirit filled life is the beginning of life itself. By the Holy Spirit we know God and are brought into an incredible union with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is the life I was given by the blood of Jesus. Before I was in darkness without God’s love in my life, now I have been brought into this unspeakable love in the Father and in the Son.
