Jn.14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me”.

This verse has always been used by the Lord throughout my life. Today I want to take a moment and reflect on the first part of what Jesus said, “I am the way”. He didn’t say “I will tell you the way” built He clearly said, “I am the way”. He actually takes us by the hand by His Spirit and personally leads us into life itself. The world likes to use formulas, principles, or methods to arrive at a destination but the Lord takes us there Himself. Here is how Barclay describes this truth.

“It was the psalmist’s prayer: ‘Teach me your way, O Lord’ (Psalm 27: II). The Jews knew much about the way of God in which they must walk. And Jesus said: ‘I am the way.’

What did he mean? Suppose we are in a strange town and ask for directions. Suppose the person asked says: ‘Take the first to the right, and the second to the left. Cross the square, go past the church, take the third on the right and the road you want is the fourth on the left.’ The chances are that we will be lost before we get half-way. But suppose the person we ask says: ‘Come. I’ll take you there.’ In that case, the person to us is the way, and we cannot miss it. That is what Jesus does for us. He does not only give advice and directions. He takes us by the hand and leads us; he strengthens us and guides us personally every day. He does not tell us about the way; he is the way.”

Now here is the amazing thing about this claim that Jesus made, not only is He the way to life, He is the very essence of life. He not only leads us down the path to our destination, He is our destination. Jesus came not to guarantee that we would live forever, He came to lead us to Himself. That is the very purpose of this teaching Jesus gave, the Lord is telling the disciples a new day is coming. Not only was Jesus assuring heaven for His followers, He was securing a place of intimacy in knowing Him as we continue our journey. Jesus is not only the way He is also the life.
