Rev.1:4 – Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come,
Timelessness, characteristic of God is almost impossible for us to comprehend. The only shot we have is by glimpses of eternity given to us by God. God inhabits eternity; in other words He lives outside of His creation which means He also lives outside of time. To Him there is no yesterday or tomorrow, He lives in the ever present timeless state of now. This is what He told Moses His Name was, “I am”. This comes into play when we start thinking about things like the incarnation of Christ and the death of human beings. Christ entered into His creation and our realm of time when He took on a human body. He left that place of time and space when He returned to glory in heaven. That’s what the book of Revelation is all about, the interplay of eternity and heaven with God’s created world. Here is how C.S. Lewis describes this thing called time.
“Well that is of course what happens to us. Our life comes to us moment by moment. One moment disappears before the next comes along: and there is room for very little in each. That is what Time is like. And of course you and I tend to take it for granted that this Time series—this arrangement of past, present and future—is not simply the way life comes to us but the way all things really exist. We tend to assume that the whole universe and God Himself are always moving on from past to future just as we do. But many learned men do not agree with that. It was the Theologians who first started the idea that some things are not in Time at all: later the Philosophers took it over: and now some of the scientists are doing the same.
Almost certainly God is not in Time.”
So God actually exists outside of time, that is the place we go to when we die. To be absent from the body is to be with the Lord in that eternal timeless place. So when we die we don’t go into a sleeping state and not even a waiting state. If heaven is timeless there can be no waiting. So if you think our loved ones are waiting on us in heaven think again. We are the only ones doing the waiting, they are already enjoying our reunion.
