Rev.1:8 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
This passage touches on the eternal nature of our Lord. He is the first and the last, the author and the finisher, the beginning and the end, and the Alpha and the Omega. In this first chapter of the book of Revelation the Lord is unveiling Himself before our very eyes. He is the beginning of creation and He is the end of this creation and then He makes all things new all over again. I can remember catching a glimpse of this promise many years ago when I was struggling with building our church building. It seemed as if the Lord was far off, even a sense of being abandoned when this promise burst into my life. He told me clearly through a word spoken over me that He was the Author and Finisher of my faith, that He would surely complete what He had started. It became so clear to me, I didn’t have any idea how we would get out of the predicament we were in but I did know this, He would finish what he started. Here is how John Wesley describes this verse.
“Alpha is the first, Omega, the last, letter in the Greek alphabet. Let his enemies boast and rage ever so much in the intermediate time, yet the Lord God is both the Alpha, or beginning, and the Omega, or end, of all things. God is the beginning, as he is the Author and Creator of all things, and as he proposes, declares, and promises so great things: he is the end, as he brings all the things which are here revealed to a complete and glorious conclusion. Again, the beginning and end of a thing is in scripture styled the whole thing. Therefore God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end; that is, one who is all things, and always the same.”
This promise has become my “go to” promise for many years now. He started this work, it wasn’t up to me to finish it, He would certainly finish what He started. I suppose the important thing in all of this is to be certain that you are involved in His kingdom plans. When it is just a human kingdom we are building then this promise does not apply. When we are building His kingdom He will move heaven and earth to see it through to the end. He is the Alpha and the Omega.
