ANOINTED TO HEAL THE BROKEN-HEARTED

Lk.4:18- The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To me, this describes the ministry of Jesus, He is anointed to heal the broken-hearted. Jesus was anointed to heal people whose lives had been destroyed by sin. I think of Mary Magdalene, Jesus cast seven demons out of her. She was probably a woman of the night and her life had been crushed by the ramifications of her lifestyle. Jesus forgave her, liberated her from this sin, and He healed her heart from all of the emotional destruction from her past life. Of course there was the woman at the well in Samaria that had been married five times, whatever destroyed those marriages a broken heart was the result. Jesus filled her with joy and healed her broken heart. Albert Barnes described this aspect of the ministry of Jesus.

To heal the brokenhearted. To console those who are deeply afflicted, or whose hearts are broken by external calamities or by a sense of their sinfulness.”

That’s the problem with sin, the memories are part of the awful fallout. Jesus washes all of that away by His precious blood and by the work of His Spirit. Matthew Henry describes the result of the Lord healing our broken hearts.

“To be a great Physician, because he was sent to heal the broken-hearted: to give peace to those who were troubled and humbled on account of sins and to give rest to those who were weary and under the burden of guilt and corruption (Mt 11:28).”

Jesus gives us rest and peace from all of the drama from our past. For Mary Magdalene, she was privileged to be the first witness of the resurrection of Jesus. The Lord met her in the garden and called her by name. He then commissioned her to preach the first resurrection message, He told her to go and tell the others that Jesus was alive from the dead.

The woman at the well was not only healed of a broken heart, she too was sent to go tell her community about Jesus. She told everyone in Samaria what the Lord had done for her. That’s the thing about being healed of a broken heart, now your heart is filled with joy and it is impossible to keep it to yourself. You too become anointed by the Spirit to go and heal others who also have a broken heart.

  1. The thing I find most disturbing especially right now since the Covid outbreak is the sleeping church. So many have paused their relationship with Jesus and allowed their flesh to control the decision making. Asbury awakened a few, the war in Ukraine as well but still the focus has been elsewhere. Oh my God, we must rejoice, because something uniquely new is on the way. The great harvest requires it.
