Ps.147:7 – 9 – Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
Sing praises to our God on the lyre,
Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who provides rain for the earth,
Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
He gives to the beast its food,
And to the young ravens which cry.

Thanksgiving brings us into the harmony of God, He is singing over us with His provision and blessing, giving thanks is our response. This Psalm of David has the aroma of spiritual awareness. As David sang to the Lord and praised Him with his instrument he was acknowledging the blessing of God all around him. He was thankful for the clouds and the rain, the simplicity of the grass covering the mountains, and God’s daily provision for all of His creatures. It was the Lord that created the deer and the cattle who live off of grass and it was the Lord that created grass with all of its nutrients to feed His creatures. It is the Lord that continually replenishes the grass so that there is an abundance for all of His animals. He also provides the wheat for our daily bread and satisfies us with His abundance. What can we do? Give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His eternal mercies are new every morning. Here is how Spurgeon describes this passage.

“Sing unto the LORD with, thanksgiving; or rather, “respond to Jehovah.” He speaks to us in his works, let us answer him with our thanks. All that he does is gracious, every movement of his hand is goodness; therefore let our hearts reply with gratitude, and our lips with song. Our lives should be responses to divine love. Jehovah is ever engaged in giving, let us respond with thanksgiving. Sing praise upon the harp unto our God. Blend music with song…..He is our God, and this fact is one choice joy of the sing. We have chosen him because he has chosen us; and we see in him peculiarities which distinguish him from all the pretended deities of those among whom we dwell. He is our God in covenant relationship for ever and ever, and to him be praise in every possible form.”

So today let’s sing to the Lord. Give thanks to Him for all He has done in our lives. Enter into his presence with thanksgiving and you will become like David, eyes wide open to all He does around us everyday.
