CHRIST WAS BORN TO SAVE SINNERS

Matt.1:21 – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
I wonder if the shepherds understood what the angels were saying that first Christmas Day, “for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” What did they mean, “a Savior who is Christ the Lord”. Could they mean save us from the Roman occupation? Is that what the angels meant? And then what about Joseph? When the angel told him, “thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins”, what were the angels even talking about but at a further look Joseph heard the word “sins”, “Save us from our sins”. Now that is another story altogether. We are forgiven for all of our past committed sins and our very nature is changed, we are delivered from the power of sin. This was the shocking turn of events, Jesus was the Messiah but a very different Messiah than they thought He would be, He didn’t come to overthrow the Romans but to deal with the issue that caused all of our problems, our sins. Here is something Spurgeon said about that.
“The Lord of glory is born the Son of man, and is named by God’s command, and by man’s mouth, Jesus the Savior. He is what he is called. He saves us from the punishment and the guilt of sin, -and then from the ill effect and evil power of sin. This he does for “his people ”, even for all who believe in him. It is his nature to do this, as we see in the fact that his very name is Jesus — Savior. We still call him by that name, for he still saves us in these latter days. Let us go and tell out his name among men; for he will save others.”
There was no way the shepherds or Joseph would have any idea about how that would look in the days ahead. Jesus would forgive prostitutes, tax collectors, political activists as well as an assortment of horrible people. That’s what He did and that is what He does. That’s why He came, its the only reason He came. The story of Jesus is the perfect, too good to be true story. Our lives were a mess but Jesus came and made all things new. The reason He came is the answer to all of man’s dilemmas, Christ came to this earth to save sinners and I am so glad that He did.

  1. And by all accounts, He hasn’t changed. Yet watch the surprise, even disgust of some “church people” when the flamboyant trans. walks to the altar in surrender ready to join. The despicable politician repents and wants to befriend you to gain advice. The gang banger with “tear tattoos” wanting to sit in with our young adults seeking change. Are we ready or will we just be another church accepting only “more qualified” No, thank God, I think not. Bring them all Jesus.
