JESUS IS THE WORD OF THE FATHER

Rev.19:13 – He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John seemed to have a unique understanding and revelation of Christ more than anyone else in the New Testament maybe only rivaled by the Apostle Paul. John was the disciple Jesus loved in the gospels, John was the only disciple that made it to the cross, Jesus appeared to him on the Isle of Patmos, and John was caught up into heaven where he had a revelation of Christ that resulted in the book we call REVELATIONS. John began his gospel with the famous statement, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God”. I have pondered this verse for over fifty years and only in the last twenty or so have I been struck with just how profound this statement is. If Jesus is the Word of God obviously John is speaking about the word of the Father. Reading Jonathan Edwards several years ago caused me to consider what this really means. If the word is a vocalized thought or idea then Jesus must be the Father’s idea of Himself expressed in a word which is actually a distinct person, the second person of the Trinity that we call Jesus. Here is something Edwards says of this.

“WHEN we speak of God’s happiness, the account that we are wont to give of it is that God is infinitely happy in the enjoyment of himself, in perfectly beholding and infinitely loving, and rejoicing in, his own essence and perfections. And accordingly it must be supposed that God perpetually and eternally has a most perfect idea of himself, as it were an exact image and representation of himself ever before him and in actual view. And from hence arises a most pure and perfect energy in the Godhead, which is the divine love, complacence and joy.”

This statement is how Edwards begins his treatise on the Trinity where he teaches in detail about Christ being the Father’s idea of Himself expressed in a distinct person. I absolutely love this, the Father has revealed Himself to us in His word which became a man to live among us and die for our sins. This is why Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the Father. No wonder John was caught up in the Spirit that Sunday on the beach on the Isle of Patmos.
