Rev.5:6 – And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.
This passage brings us to the very heart of the book of Revelation, the unveiling of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Obviously the Apostle John has seen a lot in his life. He had known Jesus in His humanity and also in His resurrected state. This was different, this was different from what he had experienced on the beach in the Isle of Patmos. This was more than John could take, he was seeing Christ in both of His natures at the same time; he was seeing the Lion and the Lamb. Here is an amazing quote from Jonathan Edwards on this passage.
“…There dwells God the Father, who is the Father of mercies, and so the Father of love, who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. There dwells Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, the Prince of peace and love, who so loved the world that he shed his blood, and poured out his soul unto death for it.…There Christ dwells in both his natures, his human and divine, sitting with the Father in the same throne. There is the Holy Spirit, the spirit of divine love, in whom the very essence of God, as it were, all flows out or is breathed forth in love, and by whose immediate influence all holy love is shed abroad in the hearts of all the church.”
John had been caught up in the Spirit from the beach in Patmos and taken into the throne room of heaven. It’s hard to describe this throne room as a room because there were millions of angels and redeemed people all in that room. What affected John about this scene was the unveiling of the humanity of Christ and the deity of Christ at the same time. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb as a human and the King of kings as the Son of God. From this point in the book of Revelation we begin to see the final chapter of human history come to pass. The time for justice and eternal rewards have come, the finality of all of this was quite overwhelming to John.
