Matt.7:24-27 – Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
We know a little bit about having a firm foundation under your house in New Orleans. For those that don’t know the whole area is 5-9 feet below sea level. What makes things even worse is the ground, it is basically reclaimed swamp land and it resemble coffee grounds rather than something you would want to build on. The solution is that you have to build your house on pilings, if not the foundation will settle, ultimately crack, and your house will be ruined. For us, building your house on a rock would be building your house on pilings. Jesus was one to listen to on this, He knew about the word of God being a foundation and he knew about home foundations from His work as a carpenter. Here is how Barclay describes this .
“JESUS was in a double sense an expert. He was an expert in Scripture. The writer of Proverbs gave him the hint for his picture: ‘When the tempest passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous are established for ever’ (Proverbs 10:25). Here is the germ of the picture which Jesus drew of the two houses and the two builders. But Jesus was also an expert in life. He was the craftsman who knew all about the building of houses, and when he spoke about the foundations of a house he knew what he was talking about. This is no illustration formed by a scholar in his study; this is the illustration of a practical man.”
The Lord is talking about the way we live our lives. The way we raise our family, the way we deal with our business endeavors, and even our moral conduct; all of these things serve as pillars under the foundation of our lives. God’s word is our foundation to build on in every arena of your life. Storms always come (we also know about that in New Orleans) but if your life is solidly built on the Rock you will stand strong.
