WATER FROM THE ROCK

1 Cor.10:4 – and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.

There is nothing like a cool drink of water on a hot day. Drinking water is a common, ordinary thing but it can be one of the greatest God given blessings in life. The children of Israel drank water from the rock that Moses struck in the wilderness, this was a picture of our Rock, Jesus Christ who was stricken for us. We drink from this Rock that follows us, we are drinking freely of this water of life. Here is how the ESV Study Bible describes this verse.

“Paul is referring to God providing Israel with bread from heaven and water from a rock. This rock appears both at the beginning of their wanderings in the desert and near the end. Rabbinic exegesis from after Paul’s time surmised that the rock followed the Israelites throughout their wanderings. This understanding of the rock may have been current in Paul’s time. If so, Paul’s claim that the Rock following them was both spiritual and Christ shows that he did not believe that a physical rock traveled with the Israelites, but that Christ (in spiritual form) was ever-present with them: he was there to supply their need for water, and there to judge those who tested him. “Rock” is a common OT name for God, and this probably facilitated Paul’s identification of the rock with Christ.”

One of the simplest lessons I have ever learned has proved to be one of the most important. Learning how to drink this water from the Rock is critical in our world today and has shown itself as irreplaceable in my life. I have learned to drink every day, not just a little bit but I need to drink continually from that Rock who is following me, and this Rock is Jesus Christ.
So what is the secret to drinking? Why do some Christians not even know what this means and others have discovered that daily drinking in of the Spirit is life itself and would not dream of isolating themselves from the Presence of the Lord?” In order to “drink” the way you approach the Lord is critical. We approach Him by faith in His blood and ask to be immersed in Him as a way of life. Recognizing that we need Him is essential.
The answer to all of this is humility and spiritual hunger. I come to Him empty but thirsty, I open my heart and begin to receive His love. I can do this because He is with me everywhere I go.
