Ps.2:4 – He who sits in the heavens laughs…
I started seeing a lot of scripture in a new light once I tasted the joy of the Lord in 1994. Before that, I had some sort of doctrinal idea about the joy of the Lord but I had not experienced that joy for myself. When supernatural joy fell on me and our church in 1994 I saw something very clear for the first time; heaven is a place of intense and radical joy. If heaven is a place of extreme joy and the baptism with the Holy Spirit is a taste of heaven then it only makes sense that laughter and overwhelming joy is our portion starting now. I also saw today’s verse from a different light; think about this, “God sits in the heavens and laughs”. He is not worried or intense, He is at total peace with His kingdom. As a matter of fact when He takes notice of the enemy’s plans He begins to laugh. From His view how could anyone plot against Him and think He would have any level of success. Here is how Matthew Henry views this text.
“He (God) is in heaven, a place of such vast prospects that he can oversee them and all their plans. His power is such that he can overcome them and all their attempts. He sits there, at peace and at rest, beyond the reach of all their petty little threats and schemes. He sits there as Judge over the life of every human being, perfectly secure in the knowledge that all his own purposes will be fulfilled in spite of all opposition. The perfect rest of the eternal Mind may be our comfort whenever our minds are disturbed. We are tossed about on earth and on the sea, but he sits in heaven, where he has prepared his throne for judgment. The attempts of Christ’s enemies are easily ridiculed. God laughs at them. They are all fools. He has them, and all their attempts, in derision, he scoffs at them, and so the virgin, the daughter of Zion, has despised them. The foolish ways of sinners are a minor diversion compared with God’s infinite Wisdom and power….”
On the Day of Pentecost they heard a sound from heaven; this sound encompassed and filled everyone in the room. There is a lot that could be said because their lives were changed dramatically in so many ways but this one thing I know, they were all filled with the joy of the Lord and that joyful sound resounded through the streets of Jerusalem. Come on and make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
