WOUNDS THAT HEAL THE SOUL

Jn.19:34,35 – Yet one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.

One of the famous hymn writers from the 18th Century was William Cowper. His most famous hymn was THERE IS A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD. Cowper fell into depression when both of his parents died suddenly and he ended up in a mental institution. He came under the care of a Christian man during that time and embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was his grasping of God’s grace to save sinners that liberated Cowper enabling him to be released from the institution. Soon after that he penned the song that has influenced possibly millions of souls in the last three hundred years. Here are some of the words of this famous song.

“There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;

And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away.

E’er since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply,

Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die. . . .

Dear dying Lamb, your precious blood shall never lose its pow’r;

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more.”

There is power in the blood of Jesus to wash away our sins, cleanse our guilty conscience, and heal our wounded soul. Even in today’s world all that is offered folks who have fallen into depression is counseling and medication. The therapy helps some people but the medication just covers over the pain and suffering. Many people who go down this path live in a state of misery, depression, and bondage for their entire life. It is only through the blood of Jesus can someone be set totally and finally free.

Many millions of people live a life of self medication trying to deal with the pain that flows from depression that often stems from tragedy and disappointments in life. There is a stream of water and blood that flows from the side of Jesus, it is a fountain of life that heals and saves to the uttermost.
