John 6:14 – Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
The Jews had been looking for the Messiah, the Prophet like Moses, for about 1400 years. In their minds Moses had brought them deliverance from the Egyptian rule, instituted their religion and practices, and had brought them into a relationship with God. Moses had prophesied about a Prophet like him which has always been connected to the Messiah. The Jews in Jesus day began to believe that Jesus just might be that prophet. Of course we know Jesus was the Prophet Moses spoke of but He is also much more than a prophet, He is the very Son of God. Here is something Jonathan Edwards said about Jesus being our prophet.
“Though it seems to me, that in some respects I was a far better Christian, for two or three years after my first conversion, than I am now; and lived in a more constant delight and pleasure: yet of late years, I have had a more full and constant sense of the absolute sovereignty of God, and a delight in that sovereignty; and have had more of a sense of the glory of Christ, as a mediator, as revealed in the gospel. On one Saturday night in particular, had a particular discovery of the excellency of the gospel of Christ, above all other doctrines; so that I could not but say to myself; “This is my chosen light, my chosen doctrine”: and of Christ, “This is my chosen prophet.” It appeared to me to be sweet beyond all expression, to follow Christ, and to be taught and enlightened and instructed by him; to learn of him, and live to him.”
I love this statement from Jonathan Edwards in referring to Jesus, “This is my chosen prophet.” Edwards had apparently had a fresh encounter with the Lord that Saturday night that made the prophetic role that Jesus fulfills in all of our lives very real to him. Since we are all human, flesh and bone, we all need a human to minister to us and lead us in the ways of the Lord. Jesus is the only man that can do that perfectly. He is our chosen prophet, He leads us consistently and He speaks into our lives. If Jesus is your chosen prophet then you too can be “taught and enlightened and instructed by him; to learn of him, and live to him”.
