Ps.42:7,8 – MSG – Chaos calls to chaos,
to the tune of whitewater rapids.
Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers
crash and crush me.
Then GOD promises to love me all day,
sing songs all through the night!
My life is God’s prayer.
This song describes the life of contrast all true Christians face. We go through a world filled with resistance and often disappointments, things rarely shake out the way we thought they would. David was very familiar with this throughout his life. He experienced the life changing and satisfying touch of God on his life from his youth yet he also experienced unthinkable resistance. Think of David’s challenges; lions, bears, a giant, a jealous king, Philistine armies, and even the treason of a rebellious son. David pretty much faced it all but in it all David could still say, “my life is God’s prayer”. What was David even talking about? In the midst of it all David was looking by faith to His heavenly Intercessor. The Lord prays for us and His prayers are expressed in and through our lives. The glory of God and the trials of life pound away at all of us. In the midst of all of that our life becomes an expression of God and His glorious plan. Here is something Spurgeon said about this passage.
“And my prayer unto the God of my life. Prayer is yoked with praise. He who is the living God, is the God of our life, from him we derive it, with him in prayer and praise we spend it, to him we devote it, in him we shall prefect it. To be assured that our sighs and songs shall both have free access to our glorious Lord is to have reason for hope in the most deplorable condition.”
The Lord often releases His prayers for us in our prayers and our worship. It may not be comfortable but when we find ourselves in a pit of despair we often look to the Lord in ways we never have before. That’s when His prayers become intertwined with our prayers. That’s when His purposes and plans begin to be released in our lives. This is why reading David’s Psalms can bring great encouragement and strength into our lives, no matter how big David’s challenges were in David’s world, God was bigger. Sing those songs with David, before long you will see your life transformed into God’s prayer in the midst of your worship and your prayer.
