Mk.6:47,48 – When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. Seeing them straining at the oars—for the wind was against them—at about the fourth watch of the night, He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. But when they saw Him walking on the sea,
Jesus was rapidly approaching the end of His earthly life, maybe this storm that threatened to sink this boatload of apostles was a glimpse into the approaching storm in the life of Jesus. If you think about it that storm didn’t have a chance. Even if you take Jesus out of this picture there is no way that this storm could take out these men who were destined to change the world. It’s really no different with you. What kind of storm could come into your life to stop God’s plans for you? I have experienced a number of storms in my life but the end result is always the same, God’s plans are bigger and more powerful that storms, ultimately the storms have to go. Here is how Augustine describes this storm.
“The fourth watch of the night marks the end of the night. One watch consists of three hours. This means that at the end of the world the Lord will come to the rescue, and he will be seen walking on the water. Although this ship is tossed by the storms of temptation, it sees the glorified Lord walking upon all the billows of the sea—that is, upon all the powers of this world. For through the voice of his Passion he gave an example of humility according to the flesh. Those waves of the sea to which he willingly submitted for our sake were stilled, in accordance with the prophecy: “I came to the height of the sea, and the storm swallowed me up.”
If Augustine is right about Jesus and storms and if we really are at the end of this gospel day, then don’t be surprised when Jesus approaches you walking on the water in the middle of the storm. If this boat full of disciples is a picture of the church then we can’t be surprised when these demonic storms try to sink us. The storms may increase as we get closer to the end but so will those amazing moments when Jesus suddenly appears. So maybe you are in a storm right now, if so make sure you invite Jesus to get in the boat with you.
