THE PLACE OF COMMANDED BLESSING

Ps.133:1-3 – Behold, how good and how pleasant it is

For brothers to live together in unity!

It is like the precious oil on the head,

Running down upon the beard,

As on Aaron’s beard,

The oil which ran down upon the edge of his robes.

It is like the dew of Hermon

Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;

For the LORD commanded the blessing there—life forever.

This Psalm connects the heavenly ministry of Jesus to the high priesthood of Aaron using the oil on Aaron’s beard to describe the anointing that fell on the day of Pentecost. David called this convergence of the anointing and God’s command the commanded blessing of the Lord. Think of this amazing declaration, whatever God blesses is absolutely blessed. This blessing includes every part of our lives; our finances, our health, also including our our marriages and our children.

So what is this place of commanded blessing? David calls it Mount Zion, a picture of the New Testament local church gathered together in one accord worshipping the Lord. This commanded blessing began on the Day of Pentecost and continues today in the gathering together of all of God’s children. This is the place of commanded blessing, worshipping the Lord in one accord with His sons and daughters. Here is how Spurgeon describes this.

“This makes Christian brotherhood so good and pleasant; it has Jehovah’s blessing resting upon it, and it cannot be otherwise than sacred like “the precious ointment”, and heavenly like “the dew of Hermon.” O for more of this rare virtue! Not the love which comes and goes, but that which dwells; not that spirit which separates and secludes, but that which dwells together; not that mind which is all for debate and difference, but that which dwells together in unity. Never shall we know the full power of the anointing till we are of one heart and of one spirit; never will the sacred dew of the Spirit descend in all its fulness till we are perfectly joined together in the same mind; never will the covenanted and commanded blessing come forth from the Lord our God till once again we shall have “one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Lord, lead us into this most precious spiritual unity, for thy Son’s sake. Amen.”

What areas of my life need the blessing of the Lord? Is it my family, business, or my health? How can I experience commanded blessing? It’s not just from church attendance yet that is where it starts, it is stepping into the harmony of the Spirit found in the body of Christ and experiencing the oil of the Spirit flowing from Christ into His people. This is the place of commanded blessing, walking in harmony with the body of Christ.
