FIRE IN HIS EYES

Rev.1:14 – His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.

Each image that John portrayed in his description of the Lord who came to him on the Isle of Patmos describe some aspect of the nature of our Lord. In this verse John focuses on His eyes. John had so many memories from those three short years that he traveled with Jesus, one of the things stuck in his memory were the eyes of Jesus. John knew he was loved by the Lord just by the look in His eyes. He had seen that compassion daily as He searched the hearts of those who came to Him for ministry. One of them was the rich young ruler. This man needed nothing as far as the natural world was concerned but there was that yearning for love down in his soul. John remembered the look in Jesus’ eyes when this young man came asking about eternity. This is what Mark said about that moment, – “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

In the eyes of Jesus that day on Patmos John saw the fire in His eyes as a fire of purification. His eyes are searching and cleansing the hearts of those who come to Him. Here is how this is described in Hebrews,

Heb.4:13 – “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” The fire in His eyes will purge the impurities from our lives. Here is how Barclay describes the fire in His eyes.

“Daniel is always in John’s mind, and this is part of the description of the divine figure who brought the vision to Daniel. ‘His eyes like flaming torches’ (Daniel 10:6). When we read the gospel story, we get the impression that those who had once seen the eyes of Jesus could never forget them. Again and again, we have the vivid picture of his eyes sweeping round a circle of people; sometimes his eyes flashed in anger (Mark 3:5); sometimes they fastened on someone in love (Mark 10:21); and sometimes they had in them all the sorrow of someone whose friends had wounded him deeply (Luke 22:61).”

Take a look at Jesus today, He has had His eye on you all throughout your life. Look into His eyes of love, one glance and you will be purified and satisfied all at the same time.
