GRACE POURED UPON US IN CHRIST

Jn.1:16 – And of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.

It is impossible to exaggerate the greatness of the blessing we have all received through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Each of us were all lost, without God and without hope until the day we received the grace of God. John called this blessing grace upon grace. So we were floundering in our own sins and human efforts trying to forge out a good life when the Lord came to us and lavished His grace upon us. His gifts have changed our lives permanently, tasting His fullness has transformed everything about us. As Christmas approaches this year we are reminded of this miracle that was revealed over 2000 years ago when God came among us and began to pour out His grace upon everyone that made room for Him in their lives. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this grace upon grace.

“How we receive this blessing: Grace for grace. The phrase is distinctive, and interpreters give it different senses, each of which is useful to illustrate the unsearchable riches of the grace of Christ. Grace for grace shows us:

The freeness of this grace. It is grace for the sake of grace. We receive grace not for our own sakes, but for the sake of Jesus Christ.

The fullness of this grace. Grace for grace is an abundance of grace, grace on grace. It is a blessing poured out, such that there will not be room to receive it: one grace promises even more grace.

The usefulness of this grace. Grace for grace is grace to advance further grace. Gracious favors received are to lead to gracious acts performed. Grace is a talent to be used.

Grace for grace is grace in us corresponding to grace in him, just as the impression on wax corresponds to the seal line for line. The grace we receive from Christ changes us into the same image.”

This is why I said it is impossible to exaggerate the greatness of the blessing grace has become in our lives. There is literally not enough room in any of our lives to receive His magnificent grace. It is overflowing as we drink in as much as we are capable of. This Christmas determine to make room for God in your life, He will do more than you can imagine if you just open wide your heart to His abundant generosity.
