GRACE – REALIZING IT IS ALL ABOUT GOD

John 1:16 – And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.

Being awakened by grace makes us aware of the conflict or tension that exists in the gospel. We come to Christ by faith because of His grace, not because of anything we have done or didn’t do, salvation is all about God. After grace has selected us and started us down the gospel path we become involved in all sorts of spiritual activity. It’s not because of a creed or a set of Christian rules, its simply we are changed and have drunk deeply of this cup of grace upon grace. Our actions don’t save us but these actions exist because we have been saved. All of our new works themselves are not about us, they are all about Him. So think about it like this, we drink of His grace for the rest of our lives lives, we are involved in Christian ministry and building the kingdom because He is at work in us. Then on the great day we receive a great reward, not because we are all that but because He has been working in us and through us since that day we were saved by His grace. Here is something Spurgeon has to say about this grace upon grace.

“His gifts are beyond measure precious, and are as freely given as the light of the sun. He gives grace to His elect because He wills it, to His redeemed because of His covenant, to the called because of His promise, to believers because they seek it, to sinners because they need it. He gives grace abundantly, seasonably, constantly, readily, sovereignly; doubly enhancing the value of the boon by the manner of its bestowal. Grace in all its forms He freely renders to His people: comforting, preserving, sanctifying, directing, instructing, assisting grace, He generously pours into their souls without ceasing, and He always will do so, whatever may occur. Sickness may befall, but the Lord will give grace; poverty may happen to us, but grace will surely be afforded; death must come but grace will light a candle at the darkest hour. Reader, how blessed it is as years roll round, and the leaves begin again to fall, to enjoy such an unfading promise as this, The Lord will give grace.”

Tasting grace is really tasting of the Lord. We drink of Him continually, we are filled daily, and He works in us constantly for His glory and our enjoyment. This whole Christian life is all about Him; He saves us, forgives us, transforms us, empowers us, and changes the world through us. No wonder it is called amazing grace.
