NEW SATISFACTION

John 4:13,14 – Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

This passage really records a revolutionary and radical moment in the ministry of Jesus. First, He is in Samaria ministering to a non-jewish woman. He chooses this moment to introduce the very essence of salvation and the new life He came to give. By ministering in Samaria He is really saying “God so loved the world…”. The Samaritans could have been the most hated of all people by the Jews and Jesus starts His outreach beyond the Jewish world in of all places, Samaria. He is also ministering to a woman. His plan for her was not just her, but He would reach many Samaritans through her words (so much for no women preachers). If the Orthodox Church is right she actually became an Evangelist preaching all over Northern Africa.

Take a close look at what Jesus offered her, satisfaction in God that would satisfy you throughout your life. Here is how Spurgeon describes it.

“He who is a believer in Jesus finds enough in his Lord to satisfy him now, and to content him for evermore. The believer is not the man whose days are weary for want of comfort, and whose nights are long from absence of heart-cheering thought, for he finds in religion such a spring of joy, such a fountain of consolation, that he is content and happy. Put him in a dungeon and he will find good company; place him in a barren wilderness, he will eat the bread of heaven; drive him away from friendship, he will meet the Friend that sticks closer than a brother. Blast all his gourds, and he will find shadow beneath the Rock of Ages; sap the foundation of his earthly hopes, but his heart will still be fixed, trusting in the Lord.”

Apparently Spurgeon felt that this Living Water would keep and satisfy you in whatever you faced. This is the cup for the downcast, the miserable, the lonely and the throwaways. Remarkably, it is also the drink for preachers and really anyone who calls on the Lord in our messy world. So go ahead and take Jesus up on His offer. Come to the fountain in Christ and you will never thirst again.
