Matt.9:36-38 -But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
The air was thick with expectancy and excitement as multitudes of the sick and oppressed were being undeniably healed. This wasn’t just one or two people but crowds of people being healed by the power and love of God. The source of this healing was God’s love for us. The crowd of sick and desperate people were pressing in to receive a miracle. There were just too many great miracles to try and ignore it, Jesus was healing and restoring multitudes by the power of God. If you pay close attention you can see the power and the attraction both at the same time. Matthew said that Jesus was moved with compassion. Jesus was deeply affected by the desperate faces in the crowd, healing was His response. Here is how Thayers’ word book describes this compassion of Jesus:
“Splangchnizomai – to be moved as to one’s bowels, hence, to be moved with compassion, have compassion (for the bowels were thought to be the seat of love and pity): absolutely,”
So what Matthew is saying is that when we hurt, Jesus hurts with you. He sees you and is moved on His insides concerning you. The love of God is closely associated with God’s healing touch on our lives. In Hebrews Paul describes compassion in the present day ministry of Jesus. Hebrews 4:15 – “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
So the Holy Spirit awakens us to God’s love for us. His healing was not just for people in a foreign land thousands of miles away in another time. He is healing people now, He is healing you now. Think about it like this, today Jesus is in heaven with the Father praying for you. He is praying for everything about us, bringing us to a place of healing and total restoration. Just as He was when He walked among us here on earth, today He literally feels what you are going through and is bringing you to a place of breakthrough. How can I access this love? That’s easy, just be still and know Him intimately. Allow Him to have your heart and recovery and restoration won’t be far behind.
