ANKLE DEEP

TESTING THE WATER – THE BEGINNING OF GOD’S TOUCH

Ezek.47:3 – And when the man (an angel) went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles.

This vision of Ezekiel is really a challenge for all of God’s people to launch out into the River of God and to allow Him to take full reign in our lives. The angel that had visited Ezekiel showed him the temple of God and the River flowing out from the temple. The angel led Ezekiel out into the River, beginning just at the River’s edge where it came up to Ezekiel’s ankles. To me, this is a picture of that first touch of God in your life when you first began to become aware of the supernatural world all around you. You realize that life was about more than the physical world, there was also an unseen world all around you.

Of course this reminds me of my conversion and my first taste of the life of God many years ago. I became aware of the reality of God when I came under conviction of my sin at the crucifixion scene in the movie Jesus Christ Superstar. Later that same night I was witnessed to by some Jesus Freaks on the lakefront in New Orleans, Jesus was very present to me that night. I was sticking my foot into the River and it began to come up to my ankles.

Many people attend church regularly and may have some strong convictions about their lifestyle and behavior but have no sense of the reality of the Lord in their lives. They may believe in God in theory but He is not real to them at all. So what is this River all about? The River is the Holy Spirit that has become available to all who believe on the Lord. Jesus is seated in heaven on the throne and this River actually flows out from Him to whoever is thirsty in the whole world. He has made the baptism in the Holy Spirit available to all of us in these last days. The baptism is a literal immersion into the presence of God. Sticking your foot in up to your ankles is only the beginning, maybe its time to go for a swim.

  1. So well put, “the first touch”. For me, I was thrown into the deep end, and Jesus was my swim coach and life preserver. Dive in, the Water is crystal clear and refreshing.
