Col. 2:18,19 – – TPT – Don’t let anyone disqualify you from your prize! Don’t let their pretended sincerity fool you as they deliberately lead you into their initiation of angel worship. For they take pleasure in pretending to be experts of something they know nothing about. Their reasoning is meaningless and comes only from their own opinions. They refuse to take hold of the true source. But we receive directly from him, and his life supplies vitality into every part of his body through the joining ligaments connecting us all as one. He is the divine Head who guides his body and causes it to grow by the supernatural power of God.
One of the supernatural characteristics of the early church was the display of God’s harmony or unity first seen on the Day of Pentecost. The disciples were constantly embroiled in disputes all the way up to the last supper. Apparently a supernatural display of unity began to be seen starting on the day of Pentecost. The sign that represented this was the corporate use of tongues as they harmonized together by the power of the Spirit. In this passage Paul seems to be describing the body of Christ as a beautiful song being conducted by the Holy Spirit Himself. The unity in the church is a supernatural sign of the harmony of God seen in the worshipping church. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this.
“The Greek word used here is epichoregeo (supplies), which interestingly can be translated as “to lead the chorus,” or “choir director.” It was used to denote a person who paid for the expenses of a Greek drama, and who supplied all their needs throughout its production. Similarly, Jesus tunes us up to heaven’s notes, and draws out of us the melody of his divine symphony. He supplies the music to us, and imparts the wisdom for us to play it under his direction. This is the artful picture of how Jesus orchestrates his body with its many members.”
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit during the Azusa Street Revival in 1906 featured this supernatural display of the harmony of the Spirit. The people gathered at Azusa would spontaneously break out into the supernatural songs of the Spirit in other tongues. What the natural mind saw as chaos or confusion the Spirit saw God’s beautiful symphony. Maybe its time for God’s song to break out again in this crazy chaotic world.
