Acts 2:14-21 – But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’
Peter and the other disciples were living in the world of prophesy. They had spent the last three years of their lives literally watching prophesy being fulfilled right under their noses. It started with the ministry of John the Baptist fulfilling the words of the prophets about “a voice crying out in the wilderness” followed by spending years traveling with Jesus; prophesy was all around them. There were all the stories of the birth of Jesus, the avalanche of signs, wonders, and miracles, the teaching from another world, His death, His resurrection and ascension, and now the rushing mighty wind and the tongues of fire. The words of the ancient prophets had come to life and they were now living a prophetic life.
John said, many years later, in the book of Revelation, that “the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy”. The testimony of Jesus was alive in John, Peter, and all the rest of the disciples. They were not just preaching a new doctrine, the testimony of Jesus was upon them and in them. The Holy Spirit had come and was leading them into all truth. The Spirit was magnifying Jesus to them and through their lives and their words. They were literally living the testimony of Jesus.
This testimony is our life today as well. We are not just rehearsing things we have heard others teach or say. We have not just taking on a philosophy or a creed. Our lives have been overtaken by the Lord. The testimony of Jesus is our testimony. We can not stop talking about what we have seen and heard. Like the disciples, prophesy is being fulfilled all around us, the words of the prophets and the apostles have come alive and have become our lives. These are the days spoken of from ancient times, this is God’s prophetic day.
