Heb.8:12,13 – For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
How is it possible that God will not remember any of my sins? There it is, right there in the Bible: “their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more”. How is that even possible? Think about all of the sins you have committed before and after you met Christ. Then think about the billions of people alive today and possibly millions that know Him. Then there are the millions of people from past generations. Each one of us have piled up a mountain of sin. The sins of humanity eclipse the Alps in magnitude, yet the blood of Jesus cleanses all of our sins not only from our conscience but also from the mind of the Lord. That is impossible for me to begin to understand; yet it is absolutely true. He remembers none of the sins of His people. The Old Covenant did not have the power to destroy our sins, it only offered a temporary covering. That’s why sacrifices had to be offered year after year. With Christ, the offering of His blood brought total and final cleansing for our sin. Here is what the Believer’s Bible commentary says about this .
“Best of all, the New Covenant promises mercy for an unrighteous people and eternal forgetfulness of their sins. The law was inflexible and unbending: “Every transgression and disobedience received a just reward” (Heb. 2:2).
Furthermore, the law could not deal effectively with sins. It provided for the atonement of sins but not for their removal. (The Hebrew word for atonement comes from the verb meaning cover.) The sacrifices prescribed in the law made a man ceremonially clean, that is, they qualified him to engage in the religious life of the nation. But this ritual cleansing was external; it did not touch a man’s inward life. It did not provide moral cleansing or give him a clear conscience.”
So if you are in Christ your sins are gone and your old life is finished. You are not only forgiven, you are brand new. You are a new creation in Christ. Maybe I committed an unthinkable amount of sin in my past but the Lord has forgotten that person ever existed. I think its time to get on with our brand new lives.
