Eph.1:17,18 – That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Jesus clearly told us that when the Holy Spirit would come He would lead us into all truth. This is the work of the Spirit, it makes spiritual things real or alive to us. I think back to the days when I first came to the Lord and see them as days of incredible revelation. My life was suddenly flooded with the fear of God as I turned away from my life of sin. I could say I was flooded with a Spirit of revelation of who Jesus was. He had become real to me and I saw Him clearly now as the Son of God. The most amazing part of all of this was a relationship with the Living God. I suddenly knew Him, not just about Him but I had a relationship with God Himself. Here is what the Pillar Commentary has to say about this.
“It is significant that Paul prays for the Spirit to produce in believers these three characteristics in particular—wisdom, revelation, and knowledge of God. They are all knowledge-related, but each with its own focus, and each with a rich biblical heritage. Wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD (Prov 1:7) and involves living in light of God’s created order and avoiding foolishness. Revelation is less humanly cultivated, as it involves God’s revealing of some previously hidden knowledge or truth. And knowledge of God speaks of personal knowledge of the Lord in the context of relationship. It is not knowledge about God, but is the kind of knowledge that can only come through intimate understanding and experience of another. Thus, Paul prays that his readers would cultivate godly wisdom, would have God’s truth revealed to them, and would have a personal knowledge of the Lord—all by the power of the Spirit.”
So this pretty much describes spiritual awakening. It starts with the fear of God leading us into repentance. After this we have a shocking revelation of who Jesus really is. That brings us to the best part, we began to know the Lord ourselves as our Savior and Friend.
