Ps.40:5 – Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
This is David’s famous song that he sang to the Lord from a horrible pit of despair. In this passage David seems to be connecting God’s thoughts with God’s miracles. The phrase “wonderful works” comes from the Hebrew word pala which refers to the miracles that the Lord performs. David was in a pit of despair facing one of the “giants” that stalked him all of his life. He could have been referring to Goliath or even King Saul or possibly the Philistine army but whatever this enemy was it seemed insurmountable to David. His only hope was a miracle and as David sang his new song, Ps.40:3 – “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD”, he understood that the Lord had set His thoughts on David and His deliverance was certain. Here is how Spurgeon describes this moment.
“The divine thoughts march with the divine acts, for it is not according the God’s wisdom to act without deliberation and counsel. All the divine thoughts are good and gracious towards his elect. God’s thoughts of love are very many, very wonderful, very practical! Muse on them, dear reader; no sweeter subject ever occupied your mind. God’s thoughts of you are many, let not yours be few in return. They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee. Their sum is so great as to forbid alike analysis and numeration. Human minds fail to measure, or to arrange in order, the Lord’s ways and thoughts; and it must always be so, for he hath said, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” No maze to lose oneself in like the labyrinth of love.….”
Maybe you find yourself today in what could be described as a horrible pit. Your enemy could be an attack on your health, your family, or even a personal addiction problem. It really doesn’t matter, the Lord clearly has His thoughts directly focused on you and you can rest assured, His wonderful works are headed your way.
