Ps.81:10 – I am the LORD your God,
Who brought you out of the land of Egypt;
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
This is an amazing word from the Lord which includes a promise for temporal as well as spiritual abundance. ‘Open my mouth’ could refer to me being totally dependent on the Lord and calling out to Him for my daily bread. I open my mouth in prayer and He wonderfully satisfies me with all I need. I suppose the downside of this would be that none of these things could ever satisfy my hungry soul because my soul longs for more than temporal satisfaction. As David said, ‘My soul longs for thee…’. My soul can only be satisfied by God. When I open my mouth wide and hunger for Him, He satisfies my soul with Himself as my portion. Delight yourself in the Lord and you will never be disappointed. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this.
“What God’s promise is. He will fill our mouths with good things (103:5). There is enough in God to fill our treasures (Pr 8:21), to replenish every hungry soul (Jer 31:25), to supply all our needs, to fulfill all our desires, and to make us completely happy. Mere worldly pleasures may sate but will never satisfy (Isa 55:2); divine pleasures will satisfy and never sate. And we may have enough from God if we pray for it in faith. Ask, and it shall be given you (Mt 7:7). He gives liberally, and upbraids not (without finding fault) (Jas 1:5). God assured his people Israel that it would be their own fault if he did not do as great and kind things for them as he had done for their ancestors. Nothing would be thought too good or too much to give them if only they would keep close to God. He would moreover have given them such and such things (2Sa 12:8).”
So it becomes obvious to a Christian that the riches and pleasures of this world are temporary and can never satisfy what our soul longs for. Henry said these things can sate or fill us to overflowing but still leaves part of us empty. Spiritual hunger takes us down a different path, we open our mouths wide and He fills us with Himself. Divine pleasures are different than earthly pleasures, no matter how much we are filled with Him we can never be unsatisfied. He was what our souls are longing for.
