Ps.84:3 – Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise! Selah
This psalm is David’s declaration of his love for the house of God. He sang about the beauty of God’s house and how his soul longed to be there. Of course it wasn’t the building itself (remember David worshipped in a tent), it was the glorious presence that David found there. His soul longed for God and it was in the gathering of the people that God often met with David. He observed the birds that not only frequented the house of God, they made their home there. They raised their children there. Apparently even the birds viewed God’s house as a safe place for them and their little brood. Spurgeon has some powerful things to say about this.
“He envied the sparrows which lived around the house of God, and picked up the stray crumbs in the courts thereof; he only wished that he, too, could frequent the solemn assemblies and bear away a little of the heavenly food. And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young. He envied also the swallows whose nests were built under the eaves of the priest’s houses, who there found a place for their young, as well as for themselves. We rejoice not only in our personal religious opportunities, but in the great blessing of taking our children with us to the sanctuary. The church of God is a house for us and a nest for our little ones. Even thine altars, O Lord of hosts. To the very altars these free birds drew near, none could restrain them nor would have wished to do so, and David wished to come and go as freely as they did.”
So maybe we can learn a lesson from the birds. Jesus taught about birds saying they didn’t worry about provision, the Father fed them. David said that the Lord had even provided a place to live for the sparrows and their families. If the Lord can provide a house for the sparrows and food for the little birds how much more will He take care of us. We just have to have enough sense to know where to meet Him, He provides all of this for His children, He has a place prepared for you in His house.
