Heb.1:2,3 – in these last days (God has) spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
One of the prophets in the Bible is named Micah which means ‘who is like God ?’ The answer of course is an emphatic ‘no one’ !!! That is the point the author of Hebrews is making in his opening comments. He is describing in the strongest terms the nature of Christ which is absolutely the very nature of God. He calls Him heir of everything, the Creator of the universe, the brightness of God’s glory, and the exact image of His person. Jesus is literally the face of God or God’s description of Himself to us. He is the perfect image of God in all aspects, He is the unveiling of the glory of God. Here is how Andrew Murray describes Him.
“And what is it that makes Him worthy of taking this high place between the Creator and the creature? Because, as the Son, it is He alone in whom the unapproachable and utterly incomprehensible glory of God is made manifest, through whom as Mediator the uncreated God, and the works of His hand, can come into contact and fellowship. His relation to creation rests on His relation to the Father.…And as a son bears the likeness of his father, because he has his life and nature from him, so the Son of God is the express image of His substance. He is of one substance with the Father—its express image—and hath therefore life in Himself, even as the Father hath life in Himself.”
God is infinite, eternal, omnipresent, and omnipotent. All of these endless qualities are incomprehensible to the human mind. This is why He became a man, to display His glory right before our eyes. Even when men saw them for themselves it was still like seeing through a glass darkly. His radiance, the visual image of His nature, cannot be grasped but only glimpsed in small pieces. Even in our glorified state in heaven it will take eternity to take His goodness in (which means we will never get to the end of His glory). So just look at Jesus again, He can be seen in His word. This is where the unveiling of His glory begins for us.
