Heb.1:3 – – Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Have you ever thought about what holds everything together? If not for the unseen so called X- factor everything would fly apart. Everything from sub-atomic particles to solar systems and galaxies are held together or held in place by something beyond our ability to quite understand. Every black hole, every galaxy, every distant solar system; it is all sustained by His word. Then there are the complexities of our society, what keeps our political system from imploding on itself or what keeps rogue nations at bay? Everything seems so fragile but we keep on keeping on day after day. Then, of course, there is the obvious – your own life. What keeps your world from totally imploding on itself? Hebrews 1:3 says that unseen force is the Lord. He is holding all things together until – until He doesn’t anymore. The end of this age is approaching when total implosion becomes inevitable. John Chrysostom had some powerful things to say about Jesus as the upholder of all things.
“God said,” it is written, “Let there be light.” “The Father,” says one [heretic], “commanded, and the Son obeyed.” But here the Son acts by word for, says he, “upholding all things,” that is, governing. He holds together what would fall to pieces, for to hold the world together is no less than to make it but even greater, if one must say a strange thing. For the one is to bring forth something out of things which are not; but the other, when things that have been made are about to fall back into nonexistence, is to hold and fasten them together, utterly at variance as they are with each other. This is indeed great and wonderful, and a certain proof of exceeding power.”
The word uphold in this verse comes from the Greek word phero. It means to hold together and carry along to completion. That’s what the Lord is doing with this age, His church, and also with each of us. The circumstances all of us have faced should have destroyed us but instead He holds our lives together and moves us along to completion. He is upholding everything and thankfully everything includes you and me.
